Inequalities

An equation is a mathematical expression that says two quantities are equal. An inequality also relates two expressions but says that they are not necessarily equal. Here are the symbols we use for inequalities:

When we see a statement such as y > −4, we read it as y is greater than negative 4. On a number line, that looks like this:

We use an open circle dot to show that −4 itself is not a solution but that everything greater than −4 is.

When we see a statement such as x ≤ 3, we read it as x is less than or equal to 3. On a number line, that looks like this:
